What are prenatal vitamins and why are they important?

Hey ladies! I've been hearing a lot about prenatal vitamins lately, but I'm not sure what they are or why they're important. Can anyone shed some light on this topic? I'd love to hear your experiences and recommendations!

They're mostly for you since baby will take absolutely everything they need from you and leave you with nothing. Though in the early weeks it's important for baby because the folic acid. Helps the spine form. 
That said this go around from week 4 to week 16 I was so damn sick I couldn't manage anything. Not even prenatals. Currently almost 32 weeks and baby (and their spine) are fine. Though I don't recommend skipping if you're able to take them and keep them down. If you keep throwing them up, it's not the end of the world. But it is better to take them. Does that make sense?
