Would you feel weird about this?

Question

My situationship is a manager at our work and I’m currently being moved up to be manager as well for a different shift. He’s been there for like 8 years or something. We were talking yesterday and he started saying how he’s upset with the job pay. He says that it gets subsidized and screws over the people who have been there longer when they raise the starting pay. Then he started saying how I would probably be making really close to what he makes and how it’s frustrating for him. Then it came back up today and he says he wants to talk to his boss about it. I asked if he was going to mention me, because I just had a feeling, and he said yes. He said it’s not in a way that would put us down, but that he feels like he has to to show he deserves a pay if newer managers will be making so close to him. But the boss above him hasn’t even started to discuss pay with us, so even outside of us having a “thing”, I can’t help but take it slightly personal.

This is why you don't mix business with pleasure. I don’t think he should be telling you this and it’d be smarter for him to just talk to the boss privately, but he does overall have a point. And I think if you guys weren't talking/dating or even colleagues, you would agree with him or see his point. But because you guys are, you're naturally going to be put off by what he's saying.

Why are you taking this personally? It has nothing to do with you, but just newer employees in general. I also worked at a job where they constantly raised new hire pay as a recruitment incentive & never raised pay for those that were good workers & loyal to the company. It’s part of the reason I quit

If he wants to talk to his boss that’s fine but the conversation needs to be strictly about his own merit and accomplishments as to why he deserves a raise.  Longevity at a company doesn’t automatically grant you anything and there could be several reasons why newer managers would be making close to the same as him.  If the only difference is years of management experience but the job descriptions and responsibilities are the same then yes….I’d expect almost the same pay with the understanding that I’m less or more because of that experience.  I hope he has a stronger argument than it’s “just not fair”.  
And no, i wouldn’t necessarily be taking this personally since you haven’t even talked salary with the boss yet.  Maybe he knows other manager’s salaries that started after him but that doesn’t mean it will be yours.  I’d insist he leave my name out of it.
