If you're from a small town, do things like this happen there?

It took 10 years for a Dollar General to be approved.
Our Walmart tried to add a grocery department but Smith's and Albertsons did not approve.
Our IHOP was "tagged" by our main and most successful Mexican restaurant (owned by my husband's family to add insult to injury) so it was shut down.
My friend opened up a paleteria shop and a donut shop owner got her banned the first year she was going to sell in the pueblo fiestas. Thankfully this year someone higher on the food chain asked her why she hadn't sold last year and when my friend explained, the jealous lady was overruled, even though she did throw a fit at the fiestas demanding my friend to show her her product.
A Starbucks was approved a couple of years ago and now they're inside Albertsons and Smith's. They were building this one with a drive through but as you can see it was burned down.
Basically our town is very opposed to growth and somehow vandalism is condoned when it comes to chain business. Local business owners are incredibly against new business and for the most part try to sabotage them.
A lot of people have moved from here because they feel our town will never progress with so much envy from locals. It seems like the big dogs want to remain at the top and will insure no competition will succeed. I'm just wondering if this small town energy is everwhere or just precedent in MY town.
It's been a little bit crazy to be honest!
