Marriage??

Question

Is marriage really the ultimate goal? Or is it true happiness?? Coming from a woman who makes her own money and no desire for children, im just wondering if marriage is truly the ultimate milestone in a relationship?? Marriage has always been so "tabboo" to me... i came from a broken home and all i want in life is to work for the things i want the most and thats a solid and welcoming home and a happy relationship.. i dont feel like a piece of paper from the government will change how you are with someone... been there done that and we were happy and never felt any different after marriage and we ultimately went separate ways... so is marriage really all that important??

I dont think of it as a “piece of paper from the government.” I think of it as a￼ ritual symbolizing our commitment to eachother for the rest of our lives. Its not the end goal, its a life promise. If you can find the same happiness without that ceremony, or heck even alone, then thats perfectly fine. You dont have to prescribe to other people’s definitions of normalcy, and a marriage is only worth it if the people are truly committed to the vows they make for eachother

Calling marriage a piece of paper is a little silly… marriage gives you relationship benefits that being boyfriend/girlfriend for life does not:
•Insurance through spouse’s work
•Death benefits
•Tax benefits
•Medical access in case of emergency (one of the most important reason to marry your partner in my opinion)
•End of life/life support decisions. If your partner was in a serious accident and on life support you would not have the ability to be a voice for them since you are not considered their family. You would have to be ok with whatever their parents or siblings choose for them. 
I have been happily married for 5 years. We had a courthouse wedding and it is one of my sweetest memories. I can’t imagine calling him my boyfriend, it feels like our relationship is too serious and established for that. I don’t really see why someone would choose not to marry their life partner given all the benefits and the possibility that you could be kept from seeing them if they were in a serious accident or being able to make decisions in a life-support situation.

It’s not the goal, but it is to what ever you want in a relationship. 
Personally I am married and have two kids and I am very happy. The reason we got married aside for love. It’s that I know he will defend my decisions for me. He is aware of all of my request if I’m ever in a position that I can not relay them my self as I know his. 
My country we have a point system instead of a mortgage. Married you can combine points. 
Insurance benefits. 
Taxes
Death benefits
Yes it’s “just a piece of paper” but we also see it as a promise. 
Now if for what ever reason I was with my ex. Marriage would have not been my goal, nor would I have made the decision to have children. I would have been happy with a healthy relationship with him. Fortunately he had other goals in life. 
All I wanted to say is, if you are happy with who you lay down to sleep with, your respected, cherish, and you have the same mindset. You made the goal. The piece of paper doesn’t matter.

for me, true happiness is definitely the goal. honestly I don’t even care about getting married, I only want to so I can have a big party with family and friends and have an excuse to go on vacation lol but i don’t think it would change my relationship at all. I’ve known couples that never got married that are happier than married couples I know

Happiness is my goal. I am anti marriage for myself. I’ve been with my 3 partners for 14 years and we have a child together. I am extremely happy and content in my life.
