Abnormal scan? Looking for some hope

Hi Everyone,

Really just looking for some hope or any input on what I’m experiencing right now. Please bear with me, this is a long one.

I went for a nuchal translucency scan last week when I was 14w0d. They were unable to do the nuchal translucency scan because baby was measuring a little too big and outside that window of being able to complete it, so instead, they did a comprehensive ultrasound, essentially a mini anatomy scan. They looked at my baby’s head, heart, stomach, spine, kidneys, etc and took measurements. Almost everything was measuring around 15w2d. After the scan the doctor that reviewed the scan came in and said she wanted to have me come back in 2 weeks, at 16 weeks, to look at my baby’s brain/head again. She said, “it’s so hard to tell because baby is still so small, but I think I’m seeing prominent frontal horns, but I’m just not sure, he’s still so small.” I asked what that could mean and she said it’s a sign of neural tube defects. I’m a NICU nurse, and know that some neural tube defects are spina bifida (myelomeningocele, meningocele) so I immediately ask if his spine looks okay, and she said yes the spine looks fine she’s just concerned about the possible frontal horns. She didn’t mention this but her report said they also couldn’t get the best view of his cerebellum. She wants me to get the serum alphafetoprotein lab to test for neural tube defects next week.

So fast forward, I’m a week out for the next ultrasound and my heart has been heavy thinking something is wrong with my baby boy.

My heart tells me that my baby is still little and growing but it was so hard to hear that something could be wrong. I wasn’t expecting this comprehensive scan so early. I guess I’m just looking for any input from any of you ladies that may have experienced something like this. I’m really holding on to so much faith and hope that everything is okay.

If you read this far, thank you so much for your time.
