Cook out etiquette

A friend of a friend invited us to her coworkers father’s day family cook out.I was reluctant to go because I didn’t know these ppl,but decided to go since it seemed like she wanted company.

I told my friend since we had plans to attend a food festival prior, I would eat there first, since I didn’t plan to much at the cook out.

Today my friend reached out to me and said “instead of showing up my our long hands to the cook out we should bring something…”

I was confused by the comment, and said what do you mean she said “you weren’t planning on taking anything…”I said no,I wasn’t even planning on eating, I was just going to keep the mutual friends company,I don’t even know these ppl… she then proceeded to say “I would think this is something you would want to doo…”

The statement annoyed me..and now I don’t want to go anymore.Usually when I get a direct invite I would ask the host if they would like me to bring anything. In this instance I didn’t think much of it,and again was just going to keep my friends company.

Is bringing a dish to a cook required at all times?
