Why have and what is a membrane sweep?

I don't know what this is or why you would have it? Can someone please explain?

If a woman is dilated at least 1 cm, an OB or midwife can insert their finger through the cervix and separate the membranes (sac that holds the baby) from the wall of the uterus. This releases prostaglandins, which can further ripen the cervix and possibly get labor started-- about 50/50 success rate!
