An update on jimmy the baby bird!
So if you haven’t seen this story, someone who knows I raise poultry/birds called me because a wild birds nest had been torn down-completely destroyed and they found one baby and called me to come get her. A day and a half later they called for another baby bird and unfortunately it never recovered after spending a day+ not being fed. I tired everything but he was never doing as well as jimmy.
I never intended to raise a baby bird, there’s this amazing wildlife rescue center an hour away from me and usually when I find any baby I bring it there but I didn’t have gas. My plans were to feed it until I could get it there. Plans were canceled when I found out starlings are considered invasive and get put down by most rehabs. So I thought, well I can do this.
So I read and found out she’s a European starling, learned how to care for her.
Adding this for the hair tuffs on that head
Jimmy will not be released, it takes a skilled rehabber to raise a bird that can be released. They also have to be raised and released in groups. Release would be a death sentence for her. So I am keeping her as a pet. I found out these birds are often kept as pets so much so that you can adopt one. They form bonds with their caregivers, and can talk like parrots. This is jimmy now today.
She is absolutely the coolest blessing. If you look at the top of the wing I think her adult feathers are coming in and she’s starting to molt.
This is what she will look like an adult which I cannot believe
I am very proud I got to save a wee life.
