Do you know of anyone who stopped working or studying because their husbands told them so?

My MIL quit college when she met her husband and she tells me that she has regreted it ever since. I don't mean to judge or criticize, but I'm just curious why some women who want to have their careers listen to their husbands when they tell them to quit their jobs/school and to stay home. Her husband has never allowed her to even have a driver's license, and sometimes argues with her when she wants to go to church for some activities. She's in her early 40's and even my husband tells me that he doesn't understand why she's still with him 😕 Is it fear, submission or is she just used to it? When she talks about him, she doesn't express love towards him.
