Has anyone ever gotten a labour lawyer? If so, how much did it cost?

My workplace is garnishing my wages now that I've put in my notice. I never signed anything saying I would pay back my signing bonus from 5 years ago and everything else they paid for was a gift (I kept the emails). In fact, the signing bonus contract says I only need to pay it back if I resign before a certain date but that date is long past!
They want me to pay back over $8k!
Is it worth it to get a labour lawyer involved? Or will that cost me more? I'm just worried that I'll be out the money they're garnishing AND lawyer fees.

Not sure of your location, but I got an employment lawyer and they reviewed my case for free. Not sure about trial costs as I was referring to a pro bono lawyer who took on special cases and we ended up settling out of court. But might be worth it to see if you can get a free consultation.

I would start with HR without a lawyer. Ask for the contract, ask for time to read it, then have a conversation about it. After that, if you still feel like they’re in the wrong and aren’t fixing it let them know that you have no choice but to get a lawyer and that all communications will be through them moving forward. That alone may get them to do the right thing—assuming you are right.

You would need a lawyer to look over your original contract. If they are very clearly in violation and you are not in any way by quitting or proven work issues, you will likely win and also win money for your attorney's fees. None of us can tell you that without looking at the contract and knowing the details as to why you quit, if youre at fault in any way etc. And it may not even go to court, you can first try having a lawyer write them a letter insisting they return the money and citing the reasoning per your contract. That may be enough for them to comply, and will likely cost just a couple hours of attorney fees. You can also try small claims court and represent yourself, though thats not always fun especially if they come in with representation. If your lawyer says it's super clearly in your favor though, you may win just by the judge reviewing your contract and case details per your lawyer's letters.
