Question

Why do a lot of people do early induction? Years ago you only get induction if your 40+ weeks.  I wonder why it changed over the years?... Any idea on why?

Mine is being done for baby's safety.
I am at a 5 fold increased risk for stillbirth due to placenta protein deficiency.  Being induced tomorrow.
And...it's not your body or your baby so your opinion doesn't really matter. If you don't want to be induced, then don't. Some of us don't have a choice and those of us that do...well, it's our choice.

This is also blowing my mind. My doc said we would discuss options if I see 41 weeks. I know there are some situations where an induction is needed but I feel like so many are getting induced @ 37, 38, 39 weeks because they're "over being pregnant". I guess every doctor is different. I'm thankful for mine

Guys, some these comments smack of "mommy wars". Can't we all remember Amy Poehler's advice? "Good for her, not for me."

I'm being threatened with induction on Monday for low amniotic fluid, and the very thought of being induced has me in tears. But the only thing I could possibly think of that would be worse than being induced is losing an otherwise healthy baby, and so of course I'll take the induction if the scan dictates the need. But if someone else chooses induction without her kid's life being on the line? Good for her, not for me.

It drives me crazy. People don't know patience anymore. I'm not sure how credible the sources was, but I've read induction increases risk of c section by 67% and NICU care by 62%. No thanks.

Well it's convenient for the doctors. They can schedule around holidays, weekends, and don't mind if it ends in a csection. . . just saying!

I think it's more about how our lives as women have changed and what they're able to diagnose medically. Our diets are different, our exercise habits are different, so are our roles in our families and society (working women, single mothers, ivf etc). As far as I know, unless medically threatening you can't be induced electively before 39wks. But medically necessary can be anything from big babies to multiples, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, the mothers weight gain etc. "Way back when" these things weren't as common I think not bc they didn't exist but I think more women are opting for prenatal care so there's more medical involvement than there used to be.

It depends on the woman's age. When above 35 years old a woman's chances of a still birth is increased significantly especially is the pregnancy goes beyond 40wks because the viability of the placenta begins to reduce so the practice is to induce when the baby is term anytime after 38wks. Other medical complications too like hypertension and diabetes might make the doctor decide on being the baby out earlier. Best thing is to trust your doctors options.

Because we are an instant gratification society! My midwife won't even discuss it until 41 weeks, which I am 3 days away from..hoping for some good news at tomorrow's appointment
