FORT CARSON??

Question

Is anyone stationed at Ft. Carson? My husband is graduating from basic and AIT in 5 days and then we'll be moving to Ft. Carson.

What should I expect? How long will it take to get into housing? What is Ft. Carson  like?

I have been here for a year now. We started off living off post. It's such a big town than where we came from so we literally chose an apartment online. It ended up being a 30 min drive to post & then when there was snow he'd have to give himself an hour for driving. We moved on post into Sioux Village the end of September & are completely happy with our decision. The lower enlisted housing (most) look older on the outside but the inside of ours is nice, he's an E4. It's so much more convenient because it's a short drive to work, he usually is able to come home for an hour on lunch & we are saving on gas. There's definitely a lot to do in Colorado Springs & I joke about it but there's literally 5 of every store. It's a pretty place & we feel we got lucky with this being his first duty station. We moved when it was snowing but had movers so it wasn't bad for us at all.

Not at Fort Carson, buy I lived in Colorado Springs for about 6 years. It's a great place, tons to do, you just have to go out and do things. It's still winter there so be prepared for cold and snow.

Meeee! We’re dual military and we just bought a house off post. We originally lived on post and tbh, we really did not like it. Most of the available homes are older on the outside. We always had issues reaching maintenance, example: our first “big” snow last year, our heat went out. I have a two year old, (she was about 1.5 at the time) and they refused to come fix it! It was 50° inside! They finally brought it space heaters— that blew breakers any time they were plugged in. That was my last straw. I was so upset. They eventually came and fixed it after it warmed up outside. Something you need to keep in mind is that when you get BAH and live on post, they will take it all. If you’re able to find something off post that’s less than your BAH, you pocket that money. Our mortgage now is less than our full BAH, so we’re getting some extra spending money.  There are pros and cons for both living on/off post. We miss living literally two minutes away from daycare- but enjoy the freedom of having a yard and no nosey neighbors.

We've been at Fort Carson for 2 years. We chose not to live on post because we don't have any kids and didn't want to live in the box they would give us. We rent a 3bd/2ba off post in Fountain for well under BAH. 
Overall, we love the area. There is plenty to do, I work for a fantastic school district, and it is absolutely gorgeous. My husband and I go hiking most weekends or take our dog to the huge dog park in the center of town. We will probably be leaving this summer and we're very sad. Colorado Springs is what you make of it, so get off post, get outside, and take advantage of the area.
