Vacationing in Mexico?

My friends and I want to go to Playa del Carmen for spring break, but my parents are worried about it being unsafe. There's no travel advisory for that part of Mexico, but they're still nervous about it. Does anyone have any thoughts/input? 
Edit: we're also looking at places in the states, like Destin, FL and the Florida Keys.

We just traveled to Cozumel Mexico. It is close to Playa Del Carmen. It is relatively safe. Just stick together and do not go off your resort. (If that is where you are staying) If you do want to go off and explore, make sure you have someone from the resort take you and stay with you.  There is a travel advisory from CDC about a virus going around that is transmitted through mosquitos. If you are trying to conceive be very careful with this advisory. It affects unborn children. It is called Zika virus. Just bring your bug spray with deet! You will be just fine. Have fun!

I went to playa del carmen on my honeymoon 3 months ago.  We never had any problems.  Just be safe, like you would regardless of where you were i.e stay in groups, watch your drinks, don't leave anyone on their own, don't get so drunk that you don't know what you're doing etc.

The mainland is a little sketchy. I'd recommend Cancun or Cozumel. We took a ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen for an excursion on our cruise and watched some guy get beat up right in front of us while we were lining up for the tour. So scary. The tour guide said probably 10 times, stay in line and do NOT veer off while we walk to the coach bus..... I wouldnt want to be walking around alone over there

We went there for our honeymoon.  We booked with apple and they told us where to go and who you talk too. Once your on your resort you should stay there.  We had a great time.  No issues and lots to do on the resorts too.  I was worried about going but it was perfectly fine.  You just have to be smart about your surroundings and who you talk too.

They have every right to be nervous, honestly. I've heard some horror stories from friends. Do you guys have any other ideas in mind?
