Tori Spelling is the perfect explanation to this question.....her last 2 babies are 4 months apart for the very same misconception. Definitely a myth!

Re: "if you have a period you can conceive" previous comment - Even without getting a period you can still conceive. Often when breastfeeding you will have little or no period but still ovulate, and in this case it's possible to become pregnant while BFing with no period.

As long as you are having a period YES you can get pregnant while you are breast feeding.

My FIL and Aunt in law are 12 months apart because the mom though she couldn't get pg while breast feeding and she did. Also my friend had her babies 11 months apart becUse she thought the same thing. So yes, you can get pg while breast feeding

I work for an ob/gyn and one of our patients delivered her first baby just months before she found out she was pregnant with her 2nd child. She didn't bother with any contraceptives -- even though she was advised to -- because she was nursing and didn't think she needed to. A friend of mine was nursing her 2nd child and got pregnant with twins, but she wanted to conceive. If you aren't physically & emotionally ready for the next one, do what you can to prevent getting pregnant.

I have known plenty of people getting prego while exclusively breast feeding. It is supposed to be less likely but I wouldn't trust it.
