The right thing!

I just took away all my teen daughters make-up.  She has been talking back and being very disrespectful to my husband & I.  I'm not sure what else to do but if I smack her I'm afraid it will be too hard.  So I take her things away. She acts like it doesn't bother her, but come morning she will be very mad.  I guess her phone is next and so on,  until she just has a bed & a dresser in her room.  Her bed time is also 8:30.  I don't know what else too do.  Any suggestions are welcomed as long as they are reasonable.  I do not discipline by hitting so that is out of the question!
