What is virginity? Warning long and philosophical

I know I've grown up with religion around and I have always wondered what is the purpose of virginity. The word being closer to virtue almost gives it a higher presence and I don't think of it as some you loose. What qualify as loosing your virginity is it all sex including oral and anal or just vaginal penetration. If so wouldn't fingering count as vaginal penetration. And if it's only penile and vaginal then how would someone who is a lesbian or gay man loose or gain their virginity? Why is virginity only for a certain kind of people for a certain way and why is it so bad to have or not have it. When I no longer became a Virgin I didn't feel different I'm still me so what is the point to virginty.
