Did you tear?

Question

Two of my friends who delivered vaginally recently both teared pretty badly during delivery. Another one of my friends was pushed to do a c section because her doc predicted that she would tear too badly if she delivered vaginally. Wondering if tearing is really that common. Afraid it's going to happen to me :( Also, any thoughts on episiotomies vs. natural tearing?

I had a 4th degree tear which is the most severe. Knowing how it was to tear and the healing process, I'd still have another baby. You can't live in fear forever

I'm doing water birth where there is almost no chance of tearing, I did tear slightly with my first In bed but not enough for stitches

I was more afraid of an episiotomy than tearing.  I went natural and tore but didn't feel it happen but I knew I'd feel it happen if they cut me! After you deliver They numb you (if you don't have an epidural ) and sew you right up.  It wasn't that bad but I was pretty sore once we got home and going to the bathroom hurt for a bit .  My friend got an episiotomy and her baby's head was small enough that she would have never torn her doc apologized but still. ...owww

I had a natural tear. It was only a first degree. I had a 7.3 pound baby with a small head. 
My tear extended down near my anus as well as up into the labia minora area. 
In all honesty, my personal healing wasn't THAT bad. Yes I was sore, but it wasn't unbearable. I took Tylenol for the first 3-4 days and was fine. 
Although, everyone is different.

I have given birth twice and haven't torn but my sister had terrible tearing it is different for everyone but you can "stretch" yourself or have you SO help you out

Natural year is better. With an episiotomy you can run the risk of tearing even further since you start off cut.

Natural tearing heals better rather than episiotomies. I tore very badly but never even noticed. My doc never told me about it until one of my follow up appointments...I don't think he wanted me to know right away in case I would panic. Very good idea! Haha

I tore naturally all on the inside 
He came out head and elbows first. It stung, I screamed, I pushed, he came out 
I had stitches but was high as a kite on gas and air and didn't feel anything. Afterwards was ok too bit omg in the loo for a while but the stitches dissolved and good as new

Tearing happens more depending on the position you deliver in. So if you're on your back it's more likely and if you're squatting or on all fours it's less likely, just because of the angles.
