Is it unreasonable to ask family members to get a flu shot before visiting your newborn baby due in winter?

I ain't gonna lie. I work with kids and I get a flu shot every year. I don't see the point in risking suffering through a preventable illness. I've literally had the flu twice in 14 years ... The only 2 years I didn't get the flu shot!  I don't want people, especially families with school-aged kids, around my new baby if they won't get a flu shot. Thoughts?

That so weird. The only time I have had the flu in my 23 years was twice when I actually got the flu shot.

Everyone is different. I don't believe in the flu shot. But it's your decision. You do what's right for you and your family

I accidentally voted yes, but 100% meant no! We required the Dtap and the flu vaccine until our baby got her 2-month vaccines. I will warn you though. We had 3 visitors during that entire period because people didn't want one or the other. 😞

I have a large family and they all respect my request for everyone to get the flu shot. They even all had whooping cough shots before our first was born. You are doing the right thing by asking you are protecting your child as every parent should.

Until Glow I've never been asked by ANYONE if I was vaccinated before seeing their baby (in the hospital or elsewhere). Seems like a bit much but if thats what you want, your baby, your rules!

I think asking for them to get a flu shot won't go over as well. The flu isn't preventable by get the flu shot. To me the DTaP is different. However, if anyone is sick, the won't be seeing my newborn.

We make our immediate family get the tdap, but not the flu shot. Even when our second was in the NICU and born during flu season- we just worked under the assumption that family, who cares about our baby, would not come around if they were sick.   
I've never gotten the flu shot and I've also never gotten the flu. If I have even the slightest sniffle or cough, I just don't go see a newborn. Especially for a summer baby, requiring the flu shot for any visitor is a bit over protective. Grandparents and siblings who are going to be around all day every day, yeah, that make sense. But the baby's second cousin who is only coming to the hospital to bring you a card? Nope. Not reasonable.

I don't get the flu shot and wouldn't get one if someone asked. The only thing I'm concerned about people getting is the TDAP before the come near her.

I never ever get the flu shot.  Never . And j haven't gotten the flu . So if your family is prone to the flu then I get it but if not don't make it a big deal

I totally understand where you're coming from! My family is weird, when any of us get the flu shot we get super super sick for 3-4 weeks. Most of us haven't had the flu since we were 10 or 11. So in my case I'm not asking anyone to get the flu shot but I am limiting who gets to see my twins and where they get to visit! We are only letting people visit in the hospital and they must wash their hands, possible wear a mask, depending on how early they babies come. Then we are only allowing people we have deemed as "helpers" at our house for at least the first month if not longer.

Just to give you another option if someone won't get the flu shot.
