Relationship doubts

My boyfriend has told me that he wants to be alone but at the same time he loves me too much to leave me, he doesn't know the reason he only suspects depression, but doesnt know where that came from too, what should i do to to help him? Or should i break up if he wants to be alone? Yet i know he loves me so that would break him even more.. I dont know what to feel or do, help!
