Adopting a cat

Christine • August 29, 2016 ❤️👶🏻
I am potentially adopting a cat but yesterday I found out the harmful effects that changing the litter box could have on the fetus. Of course I don't want to chance it but I was wondering if any of you have been in this situation and could give me some tips or advice? I really want to adopt this cat because he is a stray and I want to give him a good home. I live on the second floor of a three level apartment and the cat stays upstairs but I can tell the people who live up there just neglect him and it breaks my heart. I've found him outside multiple times freezing and scared to death. Please tell me there's some way I can still manage to keep him?!

Wash your hands very thoroughly or wear gloves. Or let your SO change it, if you have one. Also, take the poop our every day, the toxoplasmosis bacteria started to get a problem in two or three day old feces.Out cars are 13 and 16 years old and I wouldn't even think of giving them away...Be there way, the chances of catching toxoplasmosis from durty vegetables are much hugher thab to catch it from a cat. Get the cat checked by the vet, too and trusted for parasites immediately if necessary.

Vet visit asap for vaccines and deworming. Hook worm and round worm can be transmitted to humans and cause blindness in children. When changing the littler box you a mask for the dust and gloves. Scoop/clean box daily. Also check with your doctor. It should be fine I would just be careful since you are taking in a stray. Good luck momma!

Just make sure your cat stays indoors only and wear gloves when cleaning the litter. I've been changing my cat's litter all pregnancy with no problems.

As long as you don't come in contact with feces them you're ok. I have two cats and I'm 34 weeks.

If you make sure to wear gloves and wash up really well after you clean the litter you're fine. If it were me I'd take it an extra step and wear a mask and change my clothes after aswell but I'm an unnecessary worrier.

Adopt that poor baby! What a wonderful thing to do, and your baby will be FINE. I'm 15 weeks and have 6 cats (no comments please lol). I scoop their boxes 2x a day, just don't let the poo sit more than 24 hours and wash your hands after. Wear gloves if it makes u more comfortable but I don't see a reason too. Do some research, the no litterbox thing is WAY overblown. Gardening is more "dangerous" than cleaning a litterbox. Have fun with your new kitty, I am sure he will be sooo happy to have a good home!!! 🐱💘

I have 5 cats and my baby is perfectly healthy. I do have my husband do the cat box but if there are times I just can't take it I put on those high armed Playtex cleaning gloves and hold my breath and scoop away. It's only dangerous if you get the poop in your mouth.

Is there someone willing to change the liter for you until you have the baby?

If it's someone else's cat you can't just take it. Even if it's not being treated the way you would like. It's not yours. You can call the proper authorities if you think it's being abused, but if not it's not your business.

Chances are, if they don't take care of it and leave it outside to freeze, they don't want it anymore. We adopted our neighbours cat because they were like that. Living up north, the poor guy's ears froze off, so he only had little stumps where they used to be. We just talked to them and asked to have them, and they were happy to give him up so he wasn't a problem for them anymore.

P.S. This is not adopting an animal it is stealing it from someone else.

I agree that if you scoop twice a day, the harmful toxoplasmosis won't have time to grow. It takes 24 hours. My husband is scooping ours just to be safe.
