What type of parent are you?

Family counselors divide parenting styles into three categories: authoritarian (a parents-know-best approach that emphasizes obedience); permissive (which provides few behavioral guidelines because parents don't want to upset their children); and authoritative (which blends a caring tone with structure and consistent limit-setting).

Here's a description from WebMd if you are unfamiliar with the specific meaning of each term. 
I would like to say that I am Authoritative- because I am definitely a blend of the other two. I can be very laid back but I do not tolerate disrespect & harmful behaviors, especially since I have two girls and girls like to fight each other lol. I would say it really depends on my mood? My husband, however, is extremely permissive and it drives me insane! What do you think you are?

I went to a few Love & Logic conferences when my kids were younger and they referred to the type of parenting I try to use now as "benevolent dictatorship". In other words, there are some set rules that we will not bend on and obedience is just expected. For example, who's house they're allowed to go to, what time they must be home, chores and homework and the attitude with which they do those things. Then there are things we do compromise on.... Later times out as they get older, hair cuts, choices in clothing basically being allowed more freedom as they prove they can be trusted with more freedom. And if they show they can't be trusted then they lose some freedom and have to earn it back. Some behaviors they will get rewards for, some they are just expected to do because they need to act like decent human beings. It's kind of just a huge balancing act all the time between trying to protect them and teach them and allowing them to develop independence.

Dr rosemond calls this benevolent dictatorship. That's what I do. I raise with guidance and discipline that either requires I surprise with discipline in good time or have a conversation that informs them on life. Outside of that, they are taught independence so they can eventually move away from needing their parents.
