Inverted nipples and breastfeeding

With my first baby I was told right after that I had "different" nipples and that they were inverted. The lactation nurse also payed my newborn (9lbs. 10oz) directly on my incision from the c section I had hours earlier. Needless to say I was either going to cry or punch her. She gave me silicone nipple caps to put over mine and forced my son on my breast. He screamed the whole time and I felt awful. With this experience we decided to bottle feed. That was 7yrs ago. Is there anything new and improved for inverted nipples now a days? I am seriously thinking of just going straight to bottle feeding so I don't have the same experience this time.
