Here is what happens when your partner ejaculates in your vagina!
In order to make a baby, in the traditional way, your partner has to ejaculate in to your vagina. Then the little baby-makers (aka sperm) have to travel through a rather daunting obstacle course on a journey that will hopefully end with them meeting and greeting the egg all the way in your fallopian tube.
Your partner may ejaculate anywhere between 40 million to 150 million sperm. (Anything above 20 million is considered normal). Fast-swimming sperm can reach the egg in a half an hour, while others may take days. The sperm can live up to 48-72 hours. Some have even been known to survive 5 days!
The best and most of the sperm is contained in the very first squirt that comes out of your partner when he ejaculates. Amazingly, the remaining squirts contain very little sperm.
As soon as your partner ejaculates - your cervix (the opening to your womb) is drenched in sperm. From there the sperm has to hitch a ride via your cervical mucus through the opening and into your fallopian tubes on its way to meet your egg.
But there are many many dangers along the way:
First, your cervical mucus could be the wrong type. Sperm like the type of cervical mucus that looks like egg whites. It is clear and runny and the perfect medium to transport sperm thru your dangerously acidic uterus. However your cervical mucus does not always look like egg-white. Sometimes it is clumpy and creamy. This type of cervical mucus can stop the sperm dead in its tracks. At other times there is not enough cervical mucus - and yet again, the sperm dies quickly in your acidic environment.
Second, the sperm has to travel quite a bit to reach your tubes. Several inches. And that is quite a distance for an object smaller than the eye can see. Some sperms will caught in cavities known as vaginal crypts that can be found within the woman’s reproductive tract, never to be heard from again.
Only the best sperm, those with the most resilience and speed will get to where they are going. 1 in 1 million sperm that are ejaculated into your vagina will reach the site of fertilization. Perhaps that is why our babies are such miracles!
