History: Traditionally the word "cuckold" is a derogatory term used to describe the husband of an adulterous wife. While the English word only dates back to the 1200s and is a play on the mating habits of the cuckoo bird (laying eggs in another man's nest/ "Mamma's baby, Papa's maybe"), other cultures and languages tend to give more reference to horns/antlers- "wearing the horns of a cuckold" alludes to the mating habits of stags who forfeit their mates when defeated by a superior male. There is an implied humiliation to a man wearing the horns of a cuckold, not only to say he is the lesser/ beta-male but also that he is clueless. Anyone who approaches can see his wife has taken another lover, but the loving husband can't see the horns on his own head no matter how hard he looks. The symbolism of a cuckold's horns runs back as far as the Roman Emperor Claudius, who's wife Messalina is said to have been regularly unfaithful and is credited by Tacitus as once having competed with a prostitute to see who could take the most sexual partners in a single night. In the 1500s the term "wittol" was introduced to describe a man who is both fully aware and accepting of his wife's infidelities. For the purpose of the fetish however, the terms "cuckold" and "stag" are predominantly used for the husband/ primary partner, "Bull" for his wife's extramarital partner(s), and "Hotwife", "Vixen" and "Cuckoldress" are used in varying degree to describe the wives who are taking part in this relationship dynamic/fetish.

Terminology:

"Cuckold Angst": The term used to describe intense feelings of emotional conflict that occur when a cuckold finds out his partner has or is being intimate with another partner.
