Guy asked if I've had sex?

Im friends with a guy for a while and the topic of Sex came up, and he asked me if I have. I'm a virgin so I didn't really know how to say it but basically it's just a experience that hasn't happened yet for me. Is it normal for guys that are just friends to ask if you've had sex? Does he want to have sex with me or is it just curiosity?  I just find it a bit weird, but I am open about Sex with my family we talk about it and we all have different opinions about it but we don't judge. it's just I didn't know how to answer at the time
