What is PTSD in your words?

Question

If you have it or live with someone who does, how does it affect the person suffering and their loved ones? 
What symptoms do they get that are difficult? 
How serious is this disorder?

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It a disorder that happens after experiencing a traumatic experience. Most commonly associated with combat vets, but can happen to anyone. There are triggers that cause the person to have flashback of the traumatic event, which leads to anxiousness, depression etc.  There is no time frame of someone getting over PTSD. However therapy can help equip the person with coping methods.

I have it from a traumatic child hood. I get fits of rage, panic attacks, nightmares  (probably the worst symptoms I get). I went into therapy, it helped a bit

For a long time I told myself I didn't have PTSD but that seems to be the official diagnosis. Childhood sexual abuse, surviving a violent relationship that nearly cost me my life, and rape.

For the most part I've learned coping mechanisms to deal with it without medication but it took me years to get to that point. I suffered from depression, anxiety, and would have frequent panic attacks without anything triggering them. I was paranoid, distrustful, and had frequent nightmares. I started taking something for the depression, then for the anxiety and panic attacks, then I started taking something to make me sleep, then something to wake me up. Ultimately it ended in a complete breakdown.

There's still some things I struggle with. I'll have the occasional nightmare, raised voices and angry yelling can trigger a panic attack, large crowds make me nervous, and I broke down crying when I found out my second child is expected to be a girl because it terrified me that someone might hurt her too. Not that someone can't hurt or abuse a little boy but I was projecting my own fears as a little girl onto my unborn daughter.

My husband has been my rock. His very presence soothes me and he knows exactly how to calm me down and chase away any negative thoughts and fears. I've also learned meditation and what my triggers are as well as how to identify a panic or anxiety attack in the early stages so I can remove myself from whatever situation and focus on breathing through it until the feeling passes.

PTSD is post traumatic stress disorder..you can develop PTSD over any traumatic situation..my brother almost died in Afghanistan, he had sever ptsd, he has worked through some of problems and learned to control it but it doesn't go away. Some people lash out, abuse pills/alcohol etc. it affects people in different ways. Their attitude and them as a person is completely different and changed. The only way a person can really work through it is if they accept they have it and get the proper help they need to control it.

My ex roommate has PTSD. She's also my godsister. She was raped for years by her uncle and forced to keep quiet and it's really bad. She wasn't as to get hardly any sleep at night if she even went to sleep. She had terrible nightmares and was scared to be in the shower by herself. She said every time she closed her eyes she would see him. She goes to therapy and goes to group therapy as well. I think she still has it because she didn't get any justice with her trial. It's so sad to see someone going through this, whatever the reason they are.

I have ptsd from before I was adopted as a child. It was a really rough time with my paternal grandparents fighting to keep my sister and I from being adopted and they were abusive. I was always afraid somebody was going to get me, had awful nightmares, and had an obsession with death (they showed me when I was 2yo a picture of my deceased birth mother in her coffin)
To this day, images of death or hearing about people I know dying really gets to me. It's a struggle to not obsess over it. I still have nightmares sometimes and can't stand complete darkness because I used to feel like eyes are watching me. (I was told demons followed me and I'd been promised to the devil.) I'm better than when I was a kid but it never goes away completely. 
PTSD to me is a negative life-altering experience haunting you for the rest of your life.

I have PTSD. It's when you have suffered in a traumatic way or situation in your life and although a lot of people think they are over it later on in life they suffer from things like nightmares and anxiety. It's really common my therapist says. The severity ranges depending on the situation or the person!

I have ptsd and runs through my family I feel sad depress and a loner thing happened to me in the pass life now my daughter has been diagnose with it but with medication and therapy u can get threw it it postpartum stress disorder it a hurter but be strong.
