Prom?

I'm a senior in high school rn and prom is just around the corner. My boyfriend, long story short, basically cannot come to my prom because of school policy. I have the opportunity to go with a friend of a friend. I don't know him but he seems very respectful. I don't know if I want to go or not.. Any advice? I don't want to regret not going but it also doesn't sound like everything everyone seems to hype it up to be..
