Determining first day of period

I usually spot for 3-5 days before my "real" period comes. I've been noting that on my chart but not counting my first period day until I see red. I noticed today on your first period day, you can choose spotting, light, med, heavy. Should I count my first day of spotting as my first day of period or wait?
