Should property of parents who don't pay child support be seized?

I didn't even know this was a thing! And I'm not sure if this is how it works everywhere.. not yet in Illinois, I know you can lose your license, but not your car! So is it right that the state can seize your car for back child support?

So you're sending someone to the streets or possibly inhibiting their ability to make money at all by taking their vehicle?

That seems counter productive. Where is he/she going to live anyway? Move back in with the other parent who may be in another relationship? Or is that the idea so they can keep an eye on them.

Take his car so that way he really can't work, that makes sense. I think taking away the man's car is gonna make it even harder for him to pay his support. I never understood why they put men in jail for being too far in back pay for child support, like that's really gonna help get the money to the kids. Put him in jail so he has post bond, pay a lawyer, pay court fees, etc.  Putting him in more debt isn't likely to make him pay his support. I do think they need to do something to these dad's who work under the table, avoid support, or whatever they do so they don't have to pay. But I don't think taking their freedom or means of transportation is an effective way of doing it.

Yes. It should depend on how much is back owed. My mom has two guys who work with her (she does pay roll) who have child support taken out of their pay. The one just went out and bought a new motor home. Said motor home is going to be seized due to the back owed amount. Most dead beats should have assets seized.

Other wise. No they shouldn't.

How do they get to work without a car? Not every city has a good public transportation system

I know in maine they can take your license.. garnish your wages and take any other licenses you may hold.. but as far as to take property look at it like this.. I married a man who has 2 kids not with me.. he moved into my house because he was renting and I owned.. should they be able to take my house if he didn't want to pay child support.. absolutely not.. 
I know various women who are single mom's and have never asked for a dime from there child's father.. because they step up and support there kids.. man or not.. these parents that rely on child support need to get there priorities straight.   If you can't afford your apartment without child support you need to downsize.. if you can't pay your car payment without child support then sell it.. depending on support is what gets alot of women in trouble. Kids don't cost THAT much if you're responsible and money savvy.  
I see posts all the time of women like "so broke can't wait for child Support".. so get a job.. get 2 jobs.. I worked 2 jobs.. and supported my household just fine without state aid or child support.

My mom had my biological father's license pulled plenty of times he got off for 12 years of it and then quit his job so he didn't have to pay a measily 157.00. I asked my mom years later why she did it and she replied: he was mean to you and made you cry and it was the only way she could make him even feel a quarter of the pain he made me feel. And he always got a job soon after they pulled his license so he could get it back. So I guess it worked for my mom, she never wanted that jerk's money just for me to have the relationship I deserved with him.

I don't think this is a bad idea. If they are that far behind on child support, they have probably had their license taken away already. So they shouldn't be driving. 
I'm sure they were informed of the consequences of not paying. And I am also sure they don't take away your vehicle for being a just couple months behind.

I lot of people that aren't paying child support are working under the table to avoid it. This keeps the state from garnishing their wages. If they don't have a legitimate wage to garnish, and no bank account, how else can they collect? They can put the person in jail, but that won't collect anything.
