Baby shower ideas

My in laws have asked to either throw a baby shower or give us $300 towards things we need for the baby.

I am torn because I want a baby shower since I had one with my first child and feel that every baby should be celebrated.

But the money is very tempting since we have to start over with a lot of big items we need.

Also being that all my family is from the south and don't live near me and he barely speaks to majority of his family so, would it even be worth throwing a baby shower to have people there we barely speak to anymore?

Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks!
