Family doctor first or straight to OBGYN?

Question

I haven't taken a test yet but I have a strong feeling I could be pregnant. Not planned, not married, still live with parents who will not be happy, and I'm only 20. If I do take a test and it's positive should I go to my pcp first to confirm with a blood test? My issue is I'm on my parents insurance still.. So I'd like to tell them if I am before they get a bill from an OBGYN and freak out. But if I go and I'm actually not then I don't want to worry them. I have no idea how insurance really works... Luckily I am insured though. I know I shouldn't be thinking ahead like this when I'm not even sure but I just want to know before I take a home test. Thank you!!

You can always go to planned parenthood or the health department before going to a pcp or ob/gyn and submitting to your insurance if you are concerned about what your parents might think.

That's actually a really good question. See your doctor first. That won't raise  any alarms and you'll be able to do a urine sample and blood test. If it comes back positive, it'll be a good idea to get to an OBGYN but don't worry yourself about it yet.

If it's positive schedule with the OBGYN. No sense in paying two copays.

When I was pregnant with my son, I took 10 hpt that were all positive and so I HAD TO go to my pcp first (cause of my insurance) to get another PT and it was positive and so then they made me a referral (I have ahcccs) to go to an OBGYN and now my OBGYN will be my Dr forever. So I suggest you go to your pcp first because if you go to an OBGYN, depending on your insurance, they could and will reject you and tell you to go to your pcp first.

My advice is go to walmart get an 88cent test and try it. I'm sure they'd be thrilled you did that instead of spending unnecessary money at a dr office. And in my personal experience the dr told me they use the same home tests you get at the store amd only do the blood tests when there's a more serious concern, and if you do end up going to the dr and tell them you didn't take a test first to go to the store, buy one and take it and if it comes back positive go from there.
