Break up

How can you tell if your ex is just as upset as you, like Friday or yesterday he took the day we started dating out of his bio and waited a day to change the profile picture of us to some weird meme thing, and when he broke up with me(we broke up because he said he didn't want to make me depressed anymore) but he asked if we can stay friends and I said of course and we broke up on Friday and my birthday was on Saturday and yesterday he gave me a gift that he bought me before we broke up and he told me that I can KEEP his childhood bear, but he doesn't seem to want to talk to me anymore and I'm trying to be nice to him like today I was walking to the bathroom at school and he saw me and I smiled at him and he walked away and at break and lunch I always saw him looking at me if I was smiling or laughing

Like I still care about him but I just hate not talking to him, like I lost my virginity to him.. how can you tell if a guy who shows NO EMOTION if he's sad?
