Older brother being mean

My brother has been increadibly mean to me my dad and mum for years. He has made us all cry multiple times. We keep trying because we love him. I never say anything because he has had a hard life and I have felt bad for him. Today I snapped. I texted him because it was his birthday and he replied in capital letters that I and the rest of the family should just leave him alone and that we were jokes of people. I just had it and replied that I had enough and that I was indeed going to leave him alone now. 

I'm just so sad. He is my brother but he can't keep hurting the people I love.
