To keep dogs in room with babies or not??

Question

My husband and I let both our dogs sleep on the bed with us. Now that I'll be having the twins soon I worry if it's safe or higenic to keep the dogs on the bed since they shed so much hair. I told my husband it's time to re-train the dogs to sleep on their beds in the living room so I can keep our bedroom as clean as possible. What are your thoughts?

We did this with my son when he was born.  It was an adjustment for them, but once the baby was here It's like they "understood" the tone of my voice was dead serious.  This also helps with jumping on the couch, etc.  remember also that dog jumping on babies (if you have it for a moment on the bed or on couch even in a carrier) could be bad even with small dogs.  Just be consistent about it before babies.  Hopefully they will get it.  And definitely put babies blankets from the hospital in their beds before you bring babies home.  Seemed to really help with my dogs.  Good luck!

We just had a worst case scenario here in San Diego where the family dog was in bed with mom, dad and 3 day old newborn and the mother sneezed which I suppose startled the dog, who in turn attacked the baby. Unfortunately baby didn't make it and the otherwise "never aggressive" dog had to be put down. I think it's best that you allow your pets to get used to the idea of having another family member before allowing them  to be in such intimate proximity to the baby. Obviously this occurrence was an exception, but fear of being the exception is what has kept me away from my beloved turkey sandwiches, so I try to err on the side of caution.

We have a great dane. As soon as i found out we were pregnant I have been retraining him to not being allowed on the couch or the bed. My husband is the worst cause he forgets but I continuously tell him about it and he is getting better. The dog now knows the rule. I am more concerned about safety then actually hair. Especially with large dogs they don't alwats realize what they are doing and want to snuggle but can accidently smother or really hurt a baby.

I'm in the process of retraining our dogs to sleep on the floor in our room. It's not just the fur, it's the dirt from their paws from going outside that really bugs me. I also don't want them startling the new babies if they are resting or feeding.

We've chosen to retrain our dogsfor several reasons.  They've both slept with at night since they were born, but since finding out we were pregnant we decided to change that. My only suggestion is to train them long before the babies come, otherwise they MAY get overwhelmed by all the changes at once if you wait until babies come,  or MAY even take it out on the babies.  Our dogs are spoiled rotten and we don't want them to feel replaced.  The transition went really well and now they know to go right to their kennel at bedtime (they are 5 &3). Babies are not sir due for another month left. 
 (Plus seriously,  I'm huge with this pregnancy and it's wonderful to have more room in the bed!)

The babies are going to be exposed to the hair through the whole house and there's nothing wrong with that. Keeping them off the bed isn't likely to make much difference
