A friend's parent passes away; you ask how they're doing w/it:

My friend's father passed away, she never brings it up or talks about it, and I don't want to bring it up whenever we're together or going out because I don't want to bring her night down, but at the same time I don't want to seem insensitive by not asking how she's doing with it. I don't know the balance.
