I just figure that people have been having babies since the beginning of time and I doubt they knew about blood flow while laying on your back. The key is to listen to your body and do what feels best.

It's advised not too sleep on your back in the second half of pregnancy. 
When you lie on your back, the weight of the pregnant uterus slows the return of blood to your heart, which reduces blood flow to the fetus. That means the baby is getting less oxygen and fewer nutrients. occasionally lying supine will not harm a developing fetus, but sleepingthat way every night might. I'm 25 weeks and I can't do it anyway as it makes me feel really dizzy. I wouldn't risk it.

Sometimes my husband wakes me up in the middle of the night and says "hey you're on your back" and I just switch to my side. I have started noticing I get back pain if I'm on my back for too long.

Having a pregnacy pillow helps me to stay sleeping on my side, I switch sides throughout the night but never wake up on my back.

I spoke to my doctor about this.... He said that yes the left side is the most beneficiary... He told me also not to loose any sleep over it... I was constantly worrying to the point that I wasn't sleeping..... He said whatever way you can get comfortable to sleep... Weather it be the left,right Or my back. He said get sleep now while I can. And also stated that if he thought something may be wrong, That's when he would suggest to sleep a certain way. I've slept much better the past week knowing that ?

I'm only 15 weeks but laying on my back for more than a few minutes makes my belly and lower back hurt and I get really dizzy. I think like most things in pregnancy it can vary quite a bit from person to person.

My doctor says the blood flow thing is theoretical, and most importantly if you start to get reduced blood flow you'll wake up and feel light headed or sick (like Annette said). So I say it's fine if you can do it. I usually can (21 weeks), but be aware of how it makes you feel.
