You insert your finger and feel it. If you check it every day, you will start to recognize the position (high vs low), the firmness, as well as how open the cervix is. When you are most fertile, it is generally high up (so harder to reach to), feels soft (same density as touching your lip), and the cervical hole is more relaxed and open.
