Why is there such a controversy??

Yvonne
So I've been noticing a lot of different opinions on posts about " can a glass of wine hurt my baby while being pregnant" and i see so many different anwsers about how a woman's doctor said hell no but then another women will comment " my doctor said it was ok " . What's the real anwser ? Like why are 2 different OB's saying two different answers? My OB told me that any amount of alcohol  ( even one or two glasses of wine ) could potentially harm the baby and not to do it. But I know other women who's OB have told the opposite .

It's a controversy because they don't know how much alcohol can harm a fetus. Some Drs err on the side of caution and say none whatsoever, others are old school and say a bit is fine. Personally, I had a few glasses of wine throughout my pregnancy and it was fine, but I made that decision after researching it and reading "expecting better".

Because there haven't been any conclusive studies establishing a maximum amount of alcohol that is safe during pregnancy. And so because nobody knows, they advise against doing it at all. Like a rickety bridge. Nobody knows how much it can actually bear, so some never cross it at all. But some have seen lots of people get across just fine, and feel perfectly comfortable crossing it themselves, and tell others that it's safe--even if they don't know if that person could be a little too heavy for the bridge and will break it.

It's because there's no scientific evidence to back up either side. There's nothing saying that minimal drinking is bad, and there's nothing to say it's beneficial. Use your best judgment.

It's much more common over here in europe. As far as I know we don't have higher incidences of FAS. I haven't had any, but I know a lot of women that will. My friend who's a doctor said it's because a glass is fine but they can't trust you to be reasonable with it, same wig ibuprofen etc.

It depends on when you drink. Early pregnancy has a lot of brain and nervous development, so it's better not to drink then, as you don't want to mess that stuff up.
