I just met someone and his last name is raper- pronounced just like you think. I mean it's a shitty name, if it was me, I'd change it to my moms maiden name.. Just want to see what the majority would do :)

My surname was shirty but I changed it 17 years ago at 29 to one I had chosen. Reason being personal / family issues. I was graduating university and wanted to start my adult life with a new surname. Sometimes I forget I changed it. Now I'm attached to my surname and if we married I'd only add his to the add of mine ... No hyphen.
