Blood test

How long does it generally take for a pregnancy to show up on a blood test? AF was due 5-9 had blood test done on 5-16 and came back negative. Doctor told me to wait two weeks and come in for another blood test. hpt have been positive constantly since 5-12. Don't know what to think.
