Need opinions...

I started taking my birth control a little over a month ago and a well after I started I started bleeding heavy, thick, chunky,stringy, black blood. I have been having the worst cramps I have ever felt. I tried to call my doctor but he said we just have to wait and see if you get your period...does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? I'm just getting worried, it's painful.
