Negative test with no period?

I'm 5 days late with no sign of a period. I took a test three days ago which was negative. My daughter is almost 4 months and I'm pretty nervous as we haven't always been as careful as we should. It would definitely be much sooner than we expected to start trying again. Any reason why I could be getting negatives or could I be pregnant? I'm on cycle day 37 right now. My period returned a couple months ago. This would be my third period since having my baby.
