Tips to a long lasting relationship?

My boyfriend & I have been together for 4 years && I'm hoping for many many more. I'm extremely happy in this relationship. What have other people done to make their relationship last

Respect. Have a lot of respect for each other. We don't do ANYTHING without reaching a mutual agreement first. We don't go behind each other's backs.

Trust. Be completely open with each other. Secrets, no matter how innocent, can quickly ruin an amazing relationship. If your SO says something, you should be able to trust them completely without a second thought.

Fight. Or rather...don't. Think about something for 24 hours before bringing it up. This is great for so many ways, but mainly it does 2 things:
1-if it's truly important, in 24 hours you'll still be thinking about it. If it's not, chances are you'll forget all about it before you can say anything. This cuts down on unnecessary fights. And
2-when you do bring it up, you'll have thoroughly thought it out, so you won't be emotional, you'll be put together and able to discuss it more calmly.

Talk, tell each other everything, that will create trust. 
Sit and talk about problems, don't let them develop for too long, get the issues out and resolve them before a huge argument rises.
Respect that yous are different, and may have different views on things and situations- compromise. 
A few compliments a week and letting one another know that yous appreaite one another by saying, thanks or I'm really grateful for such and such. 
Lastly, a big hug a day from each other keeps stress away and makes you realise how much you love his hugs and him!

One more thing to add is that no relationship is perfect all the time. Some times  you might not want to be in the same room as the other person, others you can't imagine being away from them. As long as you found the right  person, the end result should always be working  through the problems no matter how big, so you both are happy in the end.

My husband and I have been married a little over a year but together for 8 ?. I agree 100% with all the answers given!  I would add to never go to bed angry. We've definitely had our blowouts through the years but we have never ended the day without resolving it. Since we've lived and shared a bed together we've also never kicked the other person out of our bed or let it get to a point where we decide to sleep somewhere else. Remember that NO conflict is so big that you can't reach some resolve with mutual respect and understanding!
