When do you count the start of your period?

Im not sure if I should count day 1 the day that I start spotting (the brown discharge) you get or the next day which is when my actual period starts? 
Anyone else on the same boat? I'm so confused 😞

Any bleeding of any kind is day one.. That's how I always count it anyway. Maybe other people are different

I heard that you don't count spotting. Even on these apps if you enter 'spotting' it won't start your new month.

Day 1 is the first day of flow. Spotting is just spotting

I count my day 1 as the first bright red blood I see. I think the brown is old blood and not the new period.
