Expired car seat.

So we were just given a really nice chico carseat from a good friend. We know it was never in an accident. She used it with both her kids. However, it's expired. I know they can become out dated and out of code but is ther a chance it is still ok to use?

Update after reading the comments it's not a money thing at all more my husband thinks it's ridiculous there is an expiration date. Bla bla bla typical guy. So I thought I would ask. I also was wondering if people knew of places that did buy back. I fou d out with no help here that babies r us does twice a year. Sooo if any of you have one and can wait in the fall they will take your expired seat for 15% a new one.
