Unknown pregnancy?

Question

Through the years I've read a lot of things on pregnancy and even spoken to some of my friends who have been pregnant. I hear a lot of people say that they didn't even know they were pregnant until about 3 months? If any of you have had this experience why is it that it took so long to realize? Did you still have periods/spotting?

I took care of a NICU baby once where the mom delivered at 27 weeks and had no idea she was pregnant. She had been told she could never get pregnant. She had a disorder where her weight would change up or down by 70 lbs in a year.  And she rarely had a monthly cycle. The baby had really low fluid and was sick so it didn't kick much.   It was the funnest delivery ever because she was laughing and crying and her husband looked like he was going to pass out.  They thought they would never be parents. They were by far the happiest parents I've ever seen in the NICU and their baby did quite well.

Some people have really irregular periods and no pregnancy symptoms in the beginning. I had a friend who hadn't had a period in 3 years not realize she was pregnant until 20 weeks because she didn't put on any weight, didn't have any symptoms, and didn't expect a period.

People are scared/in denial. Miscarriage is far more common than people will admit and I personally think women "ignore" symptoms until they're in the safe zone. 
 
I didn't acknowledge my pregnant until after the first trimester. But we still miscarried at 24 weeks, so even then it wasn't fool proof.
