Deserve a gentleman?

Hey ladies, so I dont mean to sound like a debbie downer, but I was wondering about the phrase 'deserving a gentleman'. A lot of songs mention it, and I was thinking about it, seeing as I have just come out of a break up with a guy who didnt really treat me the way I would like to have been. To my question, are there specific qualities or characteristics that someone (man or woman, since we live in the 21st century) would need to posess to 'deserve a gentleman'? I would assume that not everyone would because there are some really twisted people out there (or I may watch too much Law and Order 😁)
