Paranoid about Sex

So I have been talking to this guy and he is experience and this would be my first time having sex. I want to be responsible and I know condoms protect against it, but I still want to be safe. How do you ask a person if they have been tested? Do sexually active people really get tested often, is it common? Should I just go for it and trust the condom...and the person? This is my only fear when it comes to sex, I want to do it, but a disease is forever. How do I get pass this?
