Non-FTM - What is your opinion of nurseries?

Question

I'm expecting my first in August, and I have to say that I find it incredible the amount of money so many mums-to-be are spending on setting up a magazine cover worthy nursery. For those of you who are on your second pregnancy, did you set up a designer nursery for your first? Will you be doing it again the second time around?

First time around I spent so much money making my daughters room perfect. High end furniture, lots of custom things from etsy, I had to order a bedding set from Australia because no where in the United States had sheets that were just right. I spend probably thousands of dollars and months agonizing over ever detail. Kid number two is going to be lucky if they have a pack n play in a corner of the office!

Nope! My first daughter never spent any time in her nursery. She didn't even sleep in her room until she was over two. So now we are just leaving the crib in our bedroom along with the bassinet, and baby 2 will move into the big girl room bottom bunk bed when I feel she's ready. We did keep the changing table in my toddlers room and put a mobile above that, and that's the only part of the nursery that stayed.

Expecting #2 and for both of my kids I wanted the nursery to look inviting & comfortable but never to break the bank! Fresh coat of paint(waited for the paint to be on sale or have a rebate), I got $3 spice racks from ikea that I painted to match the rooms.

I never bought "crib bedding sets" because most of the pieces wouldn't get used (those fluffy bumpers aren't safe, ya never really use the comforter).  Curtains I got at Walmart in sets of 2 under $20.  Cribs I was going to buy used but my mil bought both of the kids those convertible ones so it actually saved money in the long run. Dressers I got cheap or free and then painted them & put new hard ware on. So the nurseries look good but really I didn't spend much

My first slept in a pack n play for the first 9months of his life, first two months in my room. His room was little, and had a dresser that was mine as a kid, and a cube shelf thing for toys, and a glider. I watched my sister dump lots of money into her kids as babies just for them to grow out of and destroy everything. My money was better spent on other things he needed. 
This is my husbands family's first grandbaby, and they want to spoil her. Asking about room themes and color schemes and all I can think is "we live in military housing and will probably move in a year or less after she's born... I'm not going through all that just to move" they don't seem to understand. I'd rather save the money for emergencies and necessities.

I'm a FTM as well as you, and the only reason I got a "nursery" is because my family all thought it was necessary... I however, don't think it is. I mean baby is sleeping in my room anyways, so the crib isn't going to be used for a while😅 I am very grateful though!!

I painted her room and of course has a crib and such but I never hung expensive curtains, or expensive rug. This baby doesn't even have a room yet. We're keeping him in our room hopefully he'll learn to sleep good and then can transition into a room with my dtr.

I agree. I don't understand the money on expensive nurseries. Honestly I don't even understand the money on defensive gear, like that stroller that basically is zofer bassinet on wheels?? Some ppl got the extra cash I guess.

A designer nursery was never in our budget. We bought a used crib and got a used changing table. They were both in good shape and looked nice. With my second son we never used a crib. I think he went from his bassinet to a pack and play to a toddler bed.
