Your bladder is underneath your uterus, so by having a full bladder it pushes your uterus up giving a better, less restricted view of your baby.

When I had mine I had just drank a sweet tea and really had to go and the tech told me I would have to wait because the full bladder helps the sound waves bounce around or something like that.

I've always peed before my ultrasound because midwife asks for a sample first thing. With my anatomy scan at 18 weeks I asked if I could pee first and they said to wait, that a full bladder some times helps them see things better. I would recommend going in with some pee (not uncomfortably so) and asking the tech or dr.
